Synaptic Research Logo

Synaptic Research is currently developing a protein delivery vehicle based on recombinant forms of Clostridial toxins (both C. botulinum and C. difficile), which draws upon extensive experience with these toxins. This platform technology will allow the delivery of a number of patented ubiquitin ligases to neurons and stems cells, as well as the delivery of reprogramming factors to somatic cells to generate induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.  The delivery of proteins rather than genetic elements avoids the risk of vector induced mutagenesis, reactivation of potentially carcinogenic genes, and inadvertent reversion of iPC cells to somatic cells. The induction of stem cells from somatic tissues is an attractive field for many reasons; most importantly, the novel approach to regenerative medicine provides a digression from the ethical debates surrounding embryonic stem cell use. Additional research endeavors include the development of viral expression vectors (adeno-associated, lentiviral, SV40) for therapeutic purposes utilizing patented site-specific integration to reduce risk of vector-induced mutagenesis.
