Prior to 2008, Michigan lagged behind in the field of stem cell research. A 2008 change in our laws created a level playing field and propelled Michigan to the forefront.
After legislative attempts to change Michigan’s laws were unsuccessful, Michigan Citizens for Stem Cell Research and Cures (MCSCRC) was formed in 2006 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational coalition of Michigan citizens and organizations dedicated to educating the state’s residents, public officials and policy makers about the science, the biomedical potential and the policies affecting stem cell research in Michigan. Our board included scientists, business people, professionals and lay people. Most importantly, many disease advocacy group were representated on our board. This was important for us because it helped to expand our reach.
