The Madison, Wisconsin Region is an international leader in stem cells, leading research in embryonic and derived cells since University of Wisconsin researcher, Dr. James Thomson, first discovered these cells.
A Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center serves as the focal point for research in the multi-disciplinary field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, with as many as 50 UW-Madison faculty engaged in this work. Because of this leading edge research, UW-Madison is home to the National Stem Cell Bank and WiCell, and hosts the 2008 World Stem Cell Summit. The strength of our R&D has also positioned the Madison, WI region as a strong leader in the bioscience industry, with stem cell companies like Cellular Dynamics International, Stemina and others—as well as a stronger, more broadly-defined bioscience industry base that includes more than 150 companies. This is one reason leading industry publication Fierce Biotech called Madison “One of the top five global hotspots for biotech.”
