Director, Ansary Stem Cell Institute Chief, Regnerative Medicine Weill Cornell Medicine
Shahin Rafii, MD is Arthur B. Belfer Professor of Genetic Medicine, Director of Ansary Stem Cell Institute and Division Chief of Regenerative Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. His research focuses on identifying cellular and molecular pathways involved in organ regeneration and tumor targeting. His group has spearheaded the concept that tissue-specific endothelial cells by supplying paracrine factors, known as “angiocrine factors” directly specify and maintain self-renewal and differentiation of hematopoietic, liver and lung stem and progenitor cells without provoking maladaptive fibrosis or tumorigenesis. His laboratory has developed innovative technologies to generate abundant stable and functional organotypic endothelial cells, such as lung blood vessels, that could be therapeutically transplanted for organ regeneration or targeted for blocking tumor growth.
